As part of the ICC's celebration of the game's heroes and role models, it stages the annual LG ICC Awards ceremony to recognise the major individual and team achievements in world cricket.

The ceremony features eleven awards that over the years have honoured some of the biggest names in men's and women's international cricket.

The LG ICC Awards ceremony is now in its seventh year and the 2010 Awards will take place in Bangalore on 6 October. The event will be staged in association with Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA). Previous ceremonies were held in London (2004), Sydney (2005), Mumbai (2006), Johannesburg (2007 and 2009) and Dubai (2008).

The nominations for seven of the awards will be made by a five-man ICC selection panel chaired by ICC Cricket Hall of Famer, former West Indies captain and Chairman of ICC Cricket Committee Clive Lloyd. The panel also includes former India captain Ravi Shastri, former England fast bowler Angus Fraser, ex-Zimbabwe batsman and England coach Duncan Fletcher and former Australia opener Matthew Hayden. This panel will also select the ICC Test and ODI teams of the year.

The winners of those seven individual awards will be voted upon by a 25 strong panel of renowned former players, respected members of the media, and an elite umpire and an elite match referee.

Meanwhile, the nominations for the Women's Cricketer of the Year Award will be decided by a separate 25-person voting academy featuring former players and other experts on the women's game.

The Spirit of Cricket Award will be voted on by all the Full Member international captains as well as all members of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees while the Full Member captains and elite match referees will vote on the Umpire of the Year Award.

And for the first time this year's LG ICC Awards features a new category, the LG People's Choice Award. This award will be chosen by cricket fans around the world who will get a chance to vote for their favourite player on-line from a short-list of five cricketers who will be selected by the ICC selection panel on the basis of some really innovative parameters, in sync with the values that embody brand LG.

With less than 150 days to go for ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura sounded confident about his team's chances at the mega event. Zimbabwe are placed in Group A alongside four-time winners Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Canada.

"I think it will be more like carrying on from where we left in June when we played India and Sri Lanka in a tri-nation series. Our game has been improving and we hope to pick it from there and proceed all the way past the first round stages.

"We have an added advantage on the sub-continent because of the strength of our spinners. Our batting technique seems to be improving at a very fast pace. It's one area that has been lacking in the past and I am glad we are shaping up," said Chigumbura in an interview to The Herald.

Chigumbura returned home after a stint in English county cricket to play Ireland in a three-match One-Day International series. He was particularly happy with the fact that Zimbabwe XI managed to gain honours in a drawn ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Ireland.

"I am impressed with the batting. The guys really applied themselves well and it's a very good sign especially as we prepare for the ICC Cricket World Cup and a return to Test cricket. It's just one way to show that these guys are improving. Their efforts are showing on the field and we need to keep up the standards," he said.

In particular, Chigumbura was impressed with young fast bowler Shingirai Masakadza. "Shingi is an up-and-coming fast bowler who still needs lots of encouragement and guidance. It's very good he is afforded this chance to play and like many others, he can only get better with exposure. We need more of these games," said Chigumbura.

As part of the build-up to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, Zimbabwe are set to tour South Africa next month for a series of two Twenty20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals. The Zimbabwe A team will be hosting a touring New Zealand A side at the same time in three matches at the Harare Sports Club.

"I think it's all fair to give players a chance. I am happy there are going to be many games to be played because the more we play the better we get. It creates competition for places in the team. In essence, this is healthy because it pushes everyone to perform well and justify their presence in the team. We need it because that's the only way we can improve as a nation," added Chigumbura.

England's talismanic all-rounder Andrew Flintoff on Thursday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
Andrew Flintoff

The 32-year-old all-rounder was plagued by injuries in his career and finally called time on his career after being advised by doctors."Having been told my body would no longer stand up to the rigours of cricket, I had no alternative," said Flintoff in a statement.

Flintoff played a key role in England's Ashes wins at home in 2005 and 2009 but was bogged down by knee injuries in the last few years. He added: "I was told the problems I have been trying to overcome in rehab for the last year, following the latest of a series of operations, would not recover sufficiently to allow a comeback.

"I would like to thank my family, Lancashire Cricket Club, England, all my sponsors, friends and advisers for all the help and support they have given me throughout my career.

Flintoff retired from Test cricket at the end of the 2009 Ashes series. He wanted to continue playing One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 for England.
